We have joined forces with Jodi King, Principal Consultant at AJ Chambers – an award-winning accounting and legal recruitment specialist. Jodi provided some valuable insight into what employers are really looking for when hiring within the accounting and finance industry, and how candidates can stand out from the crowd.

Here’s what he said…

What specific technical skills or software proficiencies are most in demand for accounting roles?

Technical skills will likely include being proficient in accounting software such as Sage, Xero, Quickbooks, CCH, and various others. However, we find most firms are less concerned with software skills as they feel this can easily be picked up – “if you can use one software, you can use them all”. Skills and required proficiencies will always depend on the role itself and what needs the firm is looking to fulfil – but we find that strong advisory knowledge is always sought after, and generally, problem-solving, critical thinking and the ability to analyse data will always hold you in good stead.

What advice would you give to candidates on how to stand out during the interview process?

It is absolutely critical to demonstrate that you have done extensive research on the firm, its website, any recent news articles they have been involved in, press releases, etc. It is also important to research the interviewer(s). Have a look at their profile on the firm’s website and their LinkedIn profile. If you can find any common ground, these can be very useful icebreakers. Anything that can add a personal touch goes a long way and will make you more memorable.

Being personable and friendly is an obvious but essential quality as it shows them how you could potentially interact with the existing team. Furthermore, familiarising yourself with your own CV and cross-referencing against the job spec is very important – as well as having examples or scenarios of work you’ve done in the past.

Finally, have questions prepared for the interviewer. This could be in reference to training, opportunities to progress, the wider team, or asking the interviewer about their journey within the firm.

What qualifications are employers looking for?

This will depend on what area of accountancy you are entering. But if you are looking into specific experienced roles, sought after qualifications can include:

  • Tax – Generally ATT and/or CTA are good qualifications to have. You can also specialise in specific areas of tax when studying towards the end of the AAT qualification.
  • Accounts – AAT and/or ACCA are great qualifications to have when seeking a career within this area of accountancy.
  • Audit – A lot of employers acknowledge the skills and knowledge provided by the ACA qualification when hiring auditors.
  • Management accounting – CIMA is usually the go-to qualification for all things management accounting.

Want to stand out from the crowd?

Have a look at our accounting qualifications. You can try any of our qualifications for free for seven days, just to make sure it’s the right one for you. After completing AAT, CIMA, or ACCA, you will be better prepared to begin your study journey with ATT and CTA.
