These are all large-scale networking events but there are many more regional events that give you the opportunity to meet other professionals and gain insight into how they work. Have a look at the Institute of Financial Accountants for some smaller opportunities they run. Or a quick search on Eventbrite brings up a plethora of accounting events that might be of interest. You can also talk to your tutor to see what events they go to to meet others in their profession.

Tips for making the most of networking events

  • Set goals: Decide what you want to achieve – new connections, knowledge, or clients – and plan accordingly.
  • Prepare your pitch: Practice a short, compelling introduction that highlights your expertise and goals.
  • Engage actively: Participate in Q&A sessions, interact with speakers, and connect with fellow attendees.
  • Follow up: After the event, connect with contacts on LinkedIn or send a friendly email to solidify the relationship.
  • Leverage technology: Use event apps or social media hashtags to identify key people to meet.
