Sage One often raises questions so we’ve come up with a list of the most common enquiries we come across. Have a look and if your question isn’t answered here, please get in touch.

Can I change the company name?

You can’t change the company name. When you come to do the exam you will have access to a clean version of Sage, ie not the one you have been practising on, and it will come with the correct company name already entered.

How do I set the software date in Sage?

You can’t do this in Sage One and it is no longer a requirement in the assessment

What financial year should I enter as the start year?

Try to make the entire year in the past to avoid any possible problems with reports later on. So if asked to use a start date of 1st May and it is 15th May 2019 now you should use 1st May 2018 so that the year end will be 30th April 2019. If you set it as 1st May 2019 then some of your transactions will be entered in the future, eg 25th May 2019 and Sage will give you lots of warning errors and some reports won’t be correct.

What date should I use for the opening balances?

Sage One will only allow you to use the last date of the previous year as your opening balance date. So with a start date of 1st May you would have to use 30th April to enter the opening balances. The AAT are aware of this and you won’t lose any marks because of it.

What account names should I use?

Before you start to enter anything into Sage you should scan through the opening trial balance and check that you have accounts set up for all of the items listed. Sometimes there are accounts set up already and you just need to change the name of the account, sometimes you might need to set up new accounts from scratch. Take care when entering account names as spellings will be marked.

How do I set up a new bank account?

Go to the banking screen and select New, then follow all the instructions to set up a new account. This is the only way to set one up, if you set it up as a new nominal account you are unable to make any entries into it.

Entering invoices and credit notes

Always use Quick Entries to enter all invoices and credit notes. The invoicing modules are time consuming, require details you don’t have and are not needed for the assessment. The study buddy only mentions it so that you are aware of it.

How do I enter and show evidence of a recurring transaction?

You have to make the entry for the first time, then select the transaction and then click make recurring. Enter all the required details and then take a screenshot. DO NOT press Save as this will enter all of the remaining transactions and you will lose marks. Once you have taken the screen shot and saved it as part of your evidence you can close the window without saving it.

Running reports

– Customer/Supplier Activity List – you need to run the detailed version
– Add credit limits, you may need to run more than one report and this is fine, the AAT will accept that. One report that shows the aging and one that shows the credit terms
– Audit report – must be a detailed version that excludes deleted transactions and includes the column showing bank reconciled transactions. You will need to open the cog on the left hand side of the reporting screen to choose the options that you want to include or exclude.

How do I back up?

Sage One is cloud based so there is no need to back it up and evidence of backing up is no longer a requirement of the assessment.

How do I do Tasks 1.13, 1.15, 1.18 and 1.19 from Brooklands Plants?

These requirements have been removed from the assessment so you don’t need to do them any more. Some of them are not possible in Sage One.

What do I need to do before I book my assessment?

Make sure that the assessment venue uses Sage One, and find out if they provide you with login details. If they don’t provide them, you will need to contact us and we will provide you with login details.
